Mumbai to Kolkata shifting charges, and what makes up the figure
These are general planning budgets for household moves to Kolkata, with basic packing, loading, transport and unloading as agreed. They are not shared-load rates for every size. Your quote names the mode and the pickup area, and a vehicle booked for your goods alone is priced separately on the same inventory.
| Move | Planning range |
|---|---|
| A few items | ₹12,500 – ₹22,500 |
| 1BHK | ₹22,500 – ₹41,500 |
| 2BHK | ₹34,500 – ₹64,500 |
| 3BHK | ₹48,500 – ₹82,500 |
| 4BHK | ₹62,500 – ₹1,08,500 |
| Larger homes | Quoted individually |
The width of each range reflects how much the same BHK label can hold, and whether the goods travel on a shared or a dedicated vehicle.
| Component | What drives it |
|---|---|
| Packing | Full or selected packing, and the materials the inventory needs |
| Loading and unloading | The floors, the lift, and the carry from the vehicle at each end |
| Road transport | The distance, the mode and the vehicle |
| Extras | Assembly, technician work, crates, tolls and parking, waiting, storage, redelivery, GST and optional cover |
Ways to keep the figure down, honestly
- Send a complete inventory early, so the quote does not have to change.
- Consider a shared load if your date can flex.
- Settle the access details at both ends before the survey.
- Pack the non-fragile cartons yourself if the quote allows it.
- Decide early what you will not need in Kolkata.
No saving percentage is promised for any of these. They simply remove the reasons a quote moves later.
Distance, corridor and delivery time
Plan on a road distance of about 1,900 to 2,150 km, depending on both addresses and the corridor. A public navigation tool shows 1,901 km and about 34 hours for a passenger car, using the Samruddhi Mahamarg as a reference. That is a driving figure for a car, and it says nothing about when a packed and loaded vehicle will arrive.
A possible corridor runs east through central India, on the Nagpur and Raipur side. The carrier confirms the commercial eligibility of each road and the current alignment, and no fixed list of states or single highway is assumed.
| Window | Planning figure | Counted from |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated vehicle | About 5–7 days | Dispatch, once packing and loading are finished |
| Shared load | About 7–10 days | Pickup, including the time to bring the load together |
| Car or bike carrier | About 6–9 days | Pickup, on its own dates |
| Receiving appointment | Agreed with your receiver | A slot on top of the road time |
These are preliminary planning estimates, not records of past trips or guarantees, and the transport assigned to your move confirms the window before you book.
Shared load, dedicated vehicle, or a few items
A few cartons and one bed can share space with other consignments; a full household can be quoted either way. Ask for the allocation basis: packed volume, weight or a minimum charge. The shared-load estimate includes consolidation, so an urgent arrival should be discussed before collection.
An exclusive vehicle offers greater control over dispatch and avoids consolidating your load with unrelated consignments. It still needs a realistic road window and a receiving appointment. Compare both options against the same inventory, packing scope and delivery address; include the actual Mumbai, Thane or Navi Mumbai collection point.
Plan the delivery window and the final inventory together
Agree when the packing team needs the final list, rather than assuming there is a standard free-change deadline. The agreed version must describe the same goods, mode, access and receiving address that the team will use. A late extra wardrobe or a changed floor can affect handling and vehicle space as well as price.
Before confirming packing
- Check the earliest and latest expected receiving dates against keys, possession and the person attending delivery.
- Allow the full indicative 7–10 days from pickup for a shared load, or 5–7 days after dispatch for a dedicated vehicle; packing comes before dedicated dispatch.
- Ask when the final list is needed and what reassessment applies if goods or access change afterwards.
- Coordinate your own travel and any appliance or office technicians separately from the vehicle estimate.
A Kolkata festival or rain-day appointment
If your proposed arrival falls during Durga Puja, ask the receiver and building contact about the actual approach, goods-lift availability and permitted unloading appointment for that date. Confirm those details with the carrier before fixing the slot. For heavy rain, ask whether the receiving path and staging area remain usable and how a pause or revised date will be approved. Update the same register if the appointment changes.
Writing a Kolkata address, including New Town
Kolkata addresses are written in several systems, and a mover needs yours in the form your papers use. Put the exact town and the PIN on every address, so the endpoint is clear.
| Area | What to give |
|---|---|
| New Town | The Action Area, the plot number and the premises number where you have them, the housing complex name, the tower, the flat and the entrance |
| Salt Lake | The sector, the block and the house number as written on your papers |
| South and central Kolkata, such as Ballygunge, Tollygunge, Garia or Behala | The full street, the premises number, the floor and the entrance |
| Howrah | The town and the PIN, since it is a separate endpoint and not one city drop |
The New Town development authority's published tables list the plot number and the premises number separately, alongside the housing complex name, and refer to an Action Area. For that reason a Salt Lake sector is not the same as a New Town Action Area, and the two should not be swapped. Use the identifiers on your own allotment or tenancy papers.
Add where the vehicle can stand, whether there is a lift or stairs, an entrance map pin shared privately, and a receiver's name and phone number. If a long-distance vehicle cannot reach the door, a transfer or a carry from a safe point is used only if it is actually needed, with the point, the handler and the cost agreed in advance.
Do not let a broad area name replace the property
If the address is described as Rajarhat, Baguiati, Kestopur, Lake Town or Dum Dum, copy the full road, premises or project details and PIN from your property papers. Do not substitute a New Town Action Area or a Salt Lake sector unless it belongs to that actual address.
For a project along the EM Bypass with more than one entrance, identify the entrance serving the receiving tower and goods lift. For an office in Sector V, provide the building, floor, loading point and authorised facility contact. For any older house or inner lane, show the actual approach and stopping point rather than assuming access from the neighbourhood name.
A scope revision register: keeping the inventory, price and date in step
Between the survey and the loading day, plans change. A cupboard is sold, two more cartons turn up, a floor number is corrected. On a long route, such a change can shift the price, the date and the carry, so keep one record of the version you both agreed.
Start with a baseline
Call it version one. It records the inventory, both addresses and floors, the mode, the packing and assembly scope, and the expected delivery window.
Record every change
For each change, note the revision ID and the date, what was asked for, the effect on the inventory and the access, any revised amount and date, who approved it, and who received the latest copy.
| Revision | Requested change | Effect on inventory and access | Amount and date | Approval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| V1 | Survey baseline | 24 cartons plus the listed furniture | As quoted | Customer and mover |
| V2 | Add 2 cartons, remove 1 chair | 26 cartons, with the chair struck from the furniture list | Subject to the actual quote | Both agree before work |
This is an illustration, not a record of a real job or an invoice. Twenty-four cartons plus two make 26. Nothing is added free automatically, and any change in amount follows the actual quote.
Rules that keep it useful
- A change is agreed before the work, not after.
- The packing and loading team and the Kolkata receiver use the latest copy only.
- If the final property is not ready or the address is incomplete, record it as an open item with a date to settle it.
Before dispatch, one page for the receiver
- The final inventory count and the carton IDs.
- The address, the access and where the vehicle can stand.
- The delivery window.
- What delivery covers: the entrance or the named rooms, and any assembly.
- Who to call, at both ends.
This is a worksheet you and the mover can keep, and it does not mean any special system.
Close the open items before the loading team arrives
Mark each unresolved item with a person and a date: final flat, floor, lift slot, item still being sold or assembly still being assessed. Ask the booking team when it needs those answers for packing and vehicle planning. If a change is requested later, ask whether it can be accommodated and how the quote and date would change; recording a request is not the same as agreeing it.
Keep the original approved version with the new one so an addition, removal or address correction can be traced. Share only the final accepted instructions with the working team and the Kolkata receiver, while retaining earlier versions in your own records.
Options while your final Kolkata home is still undecided
Record an unresolved address in the revision register, but also decide where the goods can actually go. A temporary place to sleep may not have the space or permission to receive a full household.
| Option to discuss | When it may fit | Costs and checks to include |
|---|---|---|
| Delay pickup or dispatch | The Mumbai property can retain the goods until the final address is ready | Your move-out deadline, revised transport availability and any booking change |
| Deliver to a temporary property | That property can receive and hold the agreed load | Its access and permission, unloading now, and a separately priced later local move |
| Named storage and later delivery | A feasible storage arrangement is confirmed for the gap | Intake count, handling, rent period, release contact, access and final delivery |
| Essentials first, remaining goods later | Two separately planned shipments suit your immediate needs | Separate inventories and transport prices, any minimum charges and both receiving appointments |
These are options to assess with the booking team, not automatic inclusions or a promise that every arrangement is available. Compare the combined cost and handling with waiting for the final property. Check any insurance arrangement against the actual stages and locations.
When the destination changes after dispatch
Contact the booking team immediately with the full new address, floor, access and receiver. Ask what change is feasible for the vehicle already travelling, and agree any revised amount, date, holding or local-transfer work before it is undertaken. Record the approved change as the next version—for example V3—and send it to the delivery contact and receiver so nobody follows the old address.
Packing, furniture, appliances and placement
Photograph the finished packages before dispatch
A finished-load photograph can help identify packages, especially when wrapping hides their colour or finish. The upright pieces in this photo show why that record needs to be linked to a list.
Before your Mumbai to Kolkata goods leave, photograph the labelled packages and retain the final inventory version. Include separately wrapped pieces and any component bags. Keep condition photographs of important items from before packing as well; an outer-load photo cannot show what is happening inside the wrapping.
Send the receiver the same final version. Check the packages as they come out, recording visible exceptions while the team is still available to acknowledge them.
Decide what the crew packs
During the survey, separate your own sealed cartons from furniture and fragile goods the crew will prepare. Label cartons by destination room as well as number; a New Town receiver who did not attend the Mumbai survey should be able to direct them without opening every box. Agree which pieces need crates or separate assessment.
Furniture and appliance preparation
List each bed or wardrobe that needs dismantling and say whether reassembly in Kolkata is included. Keep fittings in a labelled pouch linked to that item. Follow the appliance manufacturer’s transport instructions; model-specific transit bolts and electrical or plumbing work need the right preparation and technician.
Unloading and placement
Specify whether unloading ends at an accessible entrance or includes carrying goods to named rooms. A tower, flat and booked lift are more useful to the delivery team than the project name alone. Your receiver should have the final inventory, check large pieces and record shortages or visible damage at handover. Keep essential documents and valuables with you.
Moving physical office goods
For roughly 8–10 workstations with chairs, computers, a few cabinets and cartons of files, allow ₹40,500–₹70,500 as an initial planning range. Confirm the final count, transport mode and both buildings before relying on that figure.
Build the office list around destination rooms or teams: label each desk, monitor and cable pouch together, and identify who can release goods in Mumbai and receive them in Kolkata. If the destination is a new New Town office, confirm the actual tower and loading entrance before dispatch. IT backup, network configuration and reconnection stay with your IT team or appointed vendor; retail stock and machinery require a separate assessment.
Paperwork for the actual office assets
Ask the goods owner or accounts team which movement documents apply to the equipment, ownership and values being shipped. Keep the asset list, release contact, exact destination and authorised receiver consistent across the records. Trade stock and machinery need their own assessment rather than being added to a household carton list.
For employer-paid household relocation, obtain the quotation approval and invoice requirements early. Keep the agreed scope version, consignment reference, inventory, receipts and any issued policy together. The delivery count and an employer reimbursement claim serve different purposes.
Car and bike transport
The carrier, the model, the packing and the handover points all affect these figures.
| Vehicle | Planning range |
|---|---|
| Hatchback | ₹19,500 – ₹26,500 |
| Sedan | ₹23,500 – ₹30,500 |
| SUV | ₹26,500 – ₹38,500 |
| Bike | ₹8,500 – ₹9,500 |
| Heavy bike | ₹10,500 – ₹14,500 |
A carrier takes about 6 to 9 days after pickup, on its own dates, separate from your household goods. Ask what type of carrier is used, and where in Kolkata the vehicle is handed over, since that point may not be your gate.
- Photograph all sides of the vehicle, the odometer reading and any existing marks.
- Note the fuel level and the keys handed over, and keep a signed copy of the condition form.
- Remove personal items and loose accessories.
- At delivery, compare the vehicle with the form and your photos before you sign.
Keep the registration certificate, your ID and a copy of the insurance ready.
Storage, an unfinished property and cover
If the Kolkata handover date is uncertain, raise it before dispatch rather than leaving a loaded vehicle waiting. Ask what holding or storage can actually be arranged, where goods would go, how the intake count is recorded and what intake, storage and redelivery would cost. Add the unresolved possession date to the change register with a person responsible for confirming it.
For optional transit cover, ask for the insurer, declared value, premium, exclusions and claim process before the journey begins. ALPM can assist with arrangements as agreed. Keep the inventory, pre-loading photographs and delivery record together; report damage promptly to the mover and relevant insurer under the applicable terms.
How to compare quotes, and the terms to settle
A useful Mumbai–Kolkata comparison answers three questions: who is carrying the load, what exactly reaches the destination rooms, and what happens when your inventory or New Town address changes. Ask each provider to price the same version of your list, identify the transport mode and state the start point for its delivery estimate.
ALPM takes enquiries directly and prepares an itemised inventory and access scope, with the vehicle arrangement, expected window and handover count agreed for the move. Settle the advance, receipt, balance stages, cancellation and date-change terms before booking. A registration number helps identify a business; the written service scope tells you what you are buying.

Checklists before and after the move, and mistakes to avoid
Before the move
- Write your inventory, and open your scope revision register at version one.
- Write the Kolkata address in the form your papers use, with the PIN and a receiver's name.
- Ask your society and the Kolkata building about lift booking, permissions and moving hours.
- Prepare appliances as their manuals say, and pack and number your own cartons.
- Send the receiver the one-page final scope before dispatch.
After the move
- Count the cartons against the inventory, check large pieces, and note any exception before you sign.
- Book technicians for the days after the goods are due, and keep the packaging until you have checked the contents.
- Close the register, and keep the signed copy with your photos.
Common mistakes
- Changing the inventory without recording it, so the price and the count no longer match.
- Treating a Salt Lake sector as a New Town Action Area.
- Giving Howrah as part of one Kolkata drop.
- Reading a 34 hour navigation time as the delivery time.
- Choosing a shared load for a fixed arrival date.
- Signing a clean receipt before the count.
