Chennai to Ahmedabad moving cost: what to budget
On a route of about 1,800 km, the price follows volume, scope and access more than any single rate. The ranges below are indicative budget guides for a standard packed household with normal access at both ends. They are planning figures, not fixed tariffs.
| Move size | Planning range |
|---|---|
| Few items | ₹15,500–₹25,500 |
| 1BHK | ₹30,500–₹50,500 |
| 2BHK | ₹44,500–₹60,500 |
| 3BHK | ₹70,500–₹100,500 |
| 4BHK | ₹90,500–₹150,500 |
Dedicated-vehicle moves, full-load moves and heavier inventories are assessed separately after your list is reviewed, so please do not read these bands as dedicated-vehicle tariffs.
What the base price is meant to cover
The base scope is appropriate packing for each item, loading, road transport, unloading and any furniture assembly that has been agreed. Unloading is itemised and counted once. Moving goods onward into a different vehicle is additional work and is treated as such.
What is marked separately
Each of these should be written as included, extra or not applicable:
- Tax
- Tolls and parking
- Stairs or a long carry
- A shuttle at either end
- Crates for unusual items
- Waiting time
- Technical work such as appliance installation
- Unpacking of contents
- Storage
- Optional transit cover
What moves a quote up or down
- The number of fragile, heavy or oddly shaped pieces
- Floors without a working lift and the distance from the vehicle to your door
- A narrow delivery window, which can change vehicle availability or require a different mode
- Busy periods, including month-end
- Whether you pack some items yourself
A Job Transfer, Family Move or Few Cartons?
Your reason for moving helps decide the plan. An employee joining in Ahmedabad may need a bed and work desk ready for the first week. A family moving a fully furnished home needs time for kitchen packing and furniture assembly. Someone sending selected belongings can compare shared space without paying for an entire vehicle.
Joining an office in Ahmedabad or GIFT City
Keep your joining date separate from the household dispatch date. Confirm the home you will actually occupy, when its keys are available and who will receive the goods if you are at work. For an employer-paid move, get the required billing name and approval process before booking.
A settled household with furniture to take
Include storage lofts, kitchen cupboards and balcony items in the survey, not just the visible furniture. Photograph any swing, steel almirah, pooja unit or large dining table you want to move. Its packed size and dismantling design decide the handling, especially if the new home has a smaller lift or tighter stair turn.
Student, bachelor or part-home shifting
Write a short list with carton count and dimensions of the larger pieces. Compare a shared-load quote with a dedicated vehicle only after checking both dispatch windows. Carry the essentials you need immediately: a lower freight figure is less useful if you must replace them while waiting.
Shared load or dedicated vehicle
Both modes cover the same road, but they behave differently. Choosing the right one often matters more than negotiating a few hundred rupees.
| Point | Shared load | Dedicated vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Space | Your goods travel with other consignments | The vehicle is reserved for your inventory |
| Usually suits | Few items or a larger inventory when shared capacity and flexible dates suit | An inventory needing reserved capacity or closer dispatch control |
| Planning transit | About 5–8 days after dispatch | About 4–6 days after dispatch |
| Pricing | The route bands above are a starting point | Assessed separately after inventory review |
| Delivery timing | Depends on the rest of the load | Dispatch can be planned around your window; building access and road delays still matter |
| Door access | Decided by the address and vehicle size | Not guaranteed either; the address still decides |
These windows are planning estimates, not guarantees. Packing, pickup and consolidation happen before dispatch and are scheduled separately, so ask for the dispatch date in writing. Compare quotes only on the same inventory and the same mode. A shared quote placed beside a dedicated quote is not a fair comparison.
Route and timing after dispatch
Maps shows a driving distance of about 1,787 km via NH48, with alternatives of roughly 1,810 and 1,819 km via other connections. Treat about 1,800 km as a planning guide, because the actual figure depends on the carrier's road and your two addresses. Mapping hours are passenger-car timings and should not be read as a truck arrival time.
One illustration of the westward corridor runs from Chennai through Bengaluru and Pune, around the outer approach of Mumbai, then through Surat and Vadodara into Ahmedabad. It is an illustration only. The carrier chooses the road, and these places are not fixed stops.
Before dispatch
Packing and pickup are scheduled first. In a dedicated move, loading and departure often follow on the same day. In a shared move, goods may wait for consolidation before leaving, so confirm that date.
On the road
The windows are about 4–6 days for a dedicated vehicle and 5–8 days for a shared load, counted after dispatch. Weather, roadworks, traffic and access at the receiving end can add time.
At arrival
Reaching Ahmedabad is not the same as unloading. The receiving appointment is agreed against your building rules, lift booking and the person available to receive the goods. For car and bike transport, the carrier window is separate from the household move.
Chennai pickup areas
Pickup enquiries are accepted for OMR, Sholinganallur, Perungudi, Velachery, Tambaram, Medavakkam, Adyar, T. Nagar, Anna Nagar, Porur, Guindy, Ambattur, Avadi and Poonamallee. Give the exact street and entrance: loading arrangements follow your building rather than a rule for the whole locality. ALPM has a Chennai branch at Senneerkuppam, which helps with pickup planning there. Share the complete pickup address so vehicle access and the loading plan can be assessed.
What to check at the Chennai end
- Whether the community allows commercial vehicles, and in which time slots
- Whether a goods lift exists and must be booked
- How far the vehicle has to park from your door
- Whether the movers need a gate or society permission
For a tower, note the lift booking and the walk from the gate to the tower. For an independent house, show the lane and stair turns along with the room inventory. A short video of the entry route makes the assessment quicker and the quote closer to final.
Know your Ahmedabad address type
Delivery planning is easier once you know which kind of address you are unloading at. Three situations come up often, and each needs different information.
Western apartment: SG Highway, Bopal, South Bopal and Shela
For an apartment in these areas, give the society name, tower and flat number. What matters most is whether the society permits goods entry and at what times, whether the lift can be reserved for the move, and how far the vehicle must park from the tower entrance. A larger vehicle may be allowed at the gate but not inside the compound.
Old city: pol and khadki
Historic Ahmedabad includes pol neighbourhoods and khadki entrances. Street width, entrance turns and the final approach vary, so there is no blanket rule that a truck cannot enter, and no shuttle is assumed in advance. Send photos of the entrance, the street width and any turns or carriage limits, and the actual vehicle fit is assessed from those.
A workplace in GIFT is not your residence
GIFT lies between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. If your new job is there, that does not automatically make it your unloading address. Give the movers the actual residence with tower, floor and a nearby landmark, since access for a home is different from access for a workplace.
Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar: Details for Your Delivery Address
If you are choosing a home before the move, ask for its delivery entrance and lift arrangements while viewing it. Send those details with the inventory so the estimate covers the final unloading work, including any extra carry.
| Destination area | Address details | Before dispatch |
|---|---|---|
| SG Highway, Bodakdev, Thaltej or Prahlad Nagar | Society name, tower, flat and permitted unloading entrance | Ask whether the proposed vehicle can use that entrance and reserve any required lift slot. |
| Bopal, South Bopal, Shela or Ghuma | Project name, block, flat and the gate used for household deliveries | Measure the carry from the stopping point to the actual building, rather than to the campus gate alone. |
| Gota, Chandkheda or Motera | Exact society, building, floor and receiving contact | Check the lift and parking space for your own building; the area name cannot establish access. |
| Satellite, Vastrapur, Navrangpura or Paldi | Street, house or society, and the final approach | Send entrance photos and ask the property contact where the vehicle can wait safely. |
| Maninagar, Naroda, Nikol or Vastral | Full residential address, gate and floor | Show the door, stair turns and unloading path for large furniture. |
| Gandhinagar or the GIFT City side | Sector or project, plot or tower, flat and gate | Quote for that specific residence. A workplace landmark and an Ahmedabad city-centre destination are different unloading points. |
For a rented home, ask whether security needs confirmation from the owner or a move-in booking. Get the actual property’s requirements; a neighbouring society may have a different process. Use the pol and khadki guidance above for a historic-city address and share entrance photos before a vehicle is assigned.
Last-mile choices: door, short carry or smaller vehicle
A dedicated vehicle does not guarantee door access. Once the address type is clear, there are three ways to finish the delivery, and each is assessed only for feasibility, scope and cost.
- Door delivery: the vehicle reaches the entrance and unloading starts there, if the building allows it.
- Park and short carry: the vehicle stops at a permitted spot and the crew carries items the rest of the way. Ask how far the carry is and who is responsible for it.
- Conditional shuttle: goods move into a smaller vehicle only if the address truly needs it. This adds a handling step and a cost, and it is not assumed.
Agree on the choice, cost, unloading crew and each handover before move day. For a smaller-vehicle transfer, reconcile the same piece IDs before and after the transfer and record visible condition; an equal total alone will not reveal a swapped or missing piece. Outer-piece counts do not confirm the contents of closed cartons.
Last-Mile Scope record to fill in before booking
This is a simple record you complete with your mover. It is a planning tool and not an invoice or a job record.
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| Truck stand | Where the vehicle can actually stop, and the permitted time slot |
| Carry distance | The distance from the truck stand to the door, and any stairs |
| Transfer needed | Yes or no, and the smaller vehicle if yes |
| Crew and operator | Who handles each stage, including any other operator |
| Piece IDs | The outer-piece numbers handed over at each stage |
| Condition at each stage | Noted on handover, with photos where useful |
| Final unloading and assembly | The room for each item and any agreed assembly |
| Slot | The agreed arrival and lift booking |
| Approver | Who gives written approval for any extra |
| Cost basis | How each extra is charged, stated before move day |
A worked illustration: OMR flat to a Shela tower
This is a hypothetical planning example and not a real job. A 2BHK is packed in an OMR flat and travels by dedicated vehicle. At the Shela tower, trucks are allowed only in a morning window, while the goods lift can be booked only in the afternoon. The truck slot and the lift slot do not match.
There are three sensible ways to resolve this:
- Align the truck and lift slots with the society office
- Revise the delivery appointment to a day when they line up
- Use a permitted, assessed secure holding arrangement, with custody, exit and redelivery terms agreed in writing
Confirm the permitted holding location, responsible operator, protection, custody record and any waiting or redelivery charge before choosing that option.
Name a backup receiver as well. A backup receiver helps only when building entry and the lift are actually available at the time. If they are not, the answer is another agreed slot or an assessed holding arrangement. Any long carry, shuttle or holding time should be quoted before move day, not settled at the gate.
Services you can choose and how scope works
Which services apply is settled after your inventory and both addresses are reviewed. The choices below are the ones that change the quote most.
House and furniture
Home moves cover packing, loading, transit and unloading for flats, independent houses and shared accommodation. List the beds, wardrobes and tables that need dismantling at pickup and reassembly at delivery. Share fitting details, photos and room access before the survey; fixed carpentry, wall-mounted pieces and specialist work need a separate assessment. Keep labelled fittings with their matching piece, and agree which furniture must be ready first.
Few items and part-home moves
A student, a single professional or someone sending a few pieces can choose a small shared load instead of a full vehicle. The budget guide for few items is ₹15,500–25,500, and it still depends on volume and access.
Packing choices
Packing is chosen item by item: cartons with cushioning and dividers for glassware, protected surfaces and corners for furniture, and suitable cushioning for electronics. Artwork or unusually delicate pieces may need a separately assessed crate. You can also choose to pack ordinary items yourself, for example clothes and books, and leave the fragile ones to the crew. Tell the team which you are doing so the quote matches.
Unloading versus unpacking
Unloading means bringing the outer pieces in and placing them in the right rooms. Unpacking the contents of cartons is a separate choice, so ask for it to be listed if you want it.
Appliances and technical work
Disconnection and installation of appliances such as ACs or geysers should be done by a qualified technician, following the appliance manual. Follow the manual for refrigerator defrosting and drying, washing-machine transport restraints and restart instructions; arrange the preparation before the packing appointment. Ask for this to be listed as included or separate.
Office goods
For an office, each desk, chair or cabinet can be given an asset ID, with a department receiver named at the Ahmedabad end. This is covered in its own section below.
Small office moves from Chennai to Ahmedabad
ALPM can move physical office goods such as desks, chairs, computers, a few cabinets and files packed in cartons. As a planning figure, a small office of 6–8 workstations has a budget guide of ₹45,000–65,000. This is an inventory-based estimate and is confirmed after a survey, since cabinet count, file volume and building access change it.
What helps the survey
- A count of workstations, with chairs and any shared furniture
- The number of cabinets and cartons of files
- Which department will receive each group of items in Ahmedabad
- The floor, lift and loading rules at both buildings
What stays outside this budget
Stock and machinery are assessed separately. IT backup, and the disconnection and reconnection of network and computer equipment, should be handled by your own qualified provider and are outside ALPM's scope. Back up data before packing starts, and carry hard drives or backup media yourself.
Moving a car or bike
Vehicles are priced by type, and not by the household bands above. These are guides to compare options with, and the final figure depends on the model, the mode of transport, the collection date and access at both ends.
| Vehicle | Guide band |
|---|---|
| Hatchback, open carrier | ₹18,000–₹22,000 |
| Sedan or compact SUV | ₹23,000–₹26,000 |
| Large SUV | ₹27,000–₹33,000 |
| Bike up to 150cc | ₹6,000–₹8,000 |
| Premium bike | ₹8,000–₹11,500 |
A closed carrier is assessed separately.
Condition handover
Before collection, photograph the vehicle from all sides and note any marks you can see. Record the odometer reading, count the keys and list accessories such as spare wheels or child seats. Remove personal belongings, and keep registration and insurance documents ready for the carrier.
Fuel and carrier instructions
Fuel level and battery instructions depend on the carrier and the vehicle manual, so there is no universal rule. Ask the carrier what they require and follow their instructions. The car or bike carrier window is separate from the household vehicle.
Storage and optional transit cover
Two optional items are worth deciding early, because both need to be written down before move day.
Storage
If your delivery date and your move-in date do not line up, storage may help. Availability depends on the actual operator and location, so ask for these details before agreeing:
- The name and location of the storage operator
- How goods are checked in, with condition notes and piece IDs
- Whether and how you can access your goods
- The duration and the rate for each period
- How exit and redelivery to Ahmedabad are handled
Optional transit cover
Cover is provided by an insurer under its own policy, and it is optional. Before taking it, check the policy terms, the declared value, the exclusions and the deductible. Ask how and when a loss or damage is reported, and what the steps are. Cover works alongside the carrier's liability and is not a guarantee of full compensation.
Chennai Rain, Ahmedabad Heat and a Fixed Move Date
October to December pickup in Chennai
This is the northeast monsoon season. Check the forecast near your packing day, keep cartons and furniture dry before wrapping, and arrange a sheltered carrying path where possible. Discuss a backup slot if heavy rain makes loading unsafe; an extra layer of wrapping cannot replace a dry loading area.
Unloading during hot or rainy weather
For a hot-weather arrival in Ahmedabad, request a permitted earlier slot if the building can offer one. Carry medicines and other temperature-sensitive essentials yourself. After heavy rain, have the receiver check the approach and unloading surface before the vehicle reaches the gate.
Festivals, month-end and joining dates
If your date falls around Navratri, Diwali, Uttarayan or Pongal, check the receiving office’s availability and your building’s goods-movement schedule before booking the truck. Enquire early for an inflexible date, then confirm actual dispatch and delivery windows. A school start, flight or joining date should leave time for unloading and the furniture you need first.
Keep the first evening simple
Carry chargers, clothes, toiletries, medicines, important papers and a small first-night kit. Keep the bed fittings linked to the correct furniture set and identify essential kitchen cartons. Agree which room should be made usable first, within the unloading and assembly scope.
The move process, step by step
A long-haul move depends on how well each handover is prepared. This is the order a typical Chennai to Ahmedabad move follows.
- Inventory review: you share a room-by-room list with photos and any special items, and the quote is built from it.
- Written scope: packing, loading, transit, unloading and agreed assembly are listed, and extras are marked included or separate.
- Packing: cartons, cushioning and furniture protection are matched to each item, and unusual fragile pieces are assessed individually.
- Loading: the crew loads against the inventory, with heavy items low and delicate ones protected, and outer pieces are counted.
- Dispatch and transit: the vehicle travels the corridor, and you receive a planning update on arrival.
- Arrival and appointment: the delivery slot is confirmed against the address, the lift and the receiver.
- Unloading and placement: outer pieces are brought in and placed in the rooms you point to, and agreed assembly is done.
- Handover check: you check the delivery against the inventory and report concerns at once.
Keep valuables, documents, medicines, chargers and first-night essentials with you instead of in the load.
How to Reduce Chennai to Ahmedabad Shifting Costs
- Review what is worth moving. Remove unwanted furniture before the survey, then ask for a revised estimate against the reduced inventory.
- Compare shared space for a smaller load. It can reduce freight when the capacity and dates fit. Check the consolidation period as well as the after-dispatch transit window.
- Choose self-packing selectively. You may pack clothes or books yourself while arranging suitable handling for fragile items. Confirm whether the quote and any cover accept self-packed cartons.
- Fix access before dispatch. Matching the truck and lift slots can prevent avoidable waiting or another delivery appointment. Tell the mover about a long carry before the price is agreed.
- Compare the final scope. A transport-only number and a packed-household quote cover different work. Match packing, loading, unloading, assembly, taxes and agreed extras before deciding which costs less.
If the destination changes to Surat or Vadodara, request a quote for that city’s actual address. The Chennai to Surat guide and Vadodara moving guide cover those routes separately. A second drop on the way needs prior approval, an item-by-stop list and revised handling, route and timing.
Why ALPM and how to compare quotes fairly
ALPM, Agarwal Logistics Packers and Movers, is an independent business with its own registration and has no connection to similarly named companies. For this route, that translates into a few practical things:
- The Chennai branch at Senneerkuppam supports pickup planning
- The scope is itemised, and access is reviewed from photos or a short video
- You have an agreed contact for the move
- Outer-piece counts are recorded at handover so delivery can be checked against them
Comparing quotes on equal terms
- Give every provider the same inventory list and the same photos
- Compare shared with shared and dedicated with dedicated
- Check that packing, loading, unloading and agreed assembly are each listed
- Look at what is marked separate: tolls, parking, tax, cover, storage and technical work
- Ask about payment, advance, cancellation and change terms
- Ask what happens if the Ahmedabad access differs from what you described
Documents and checklist before move day
Having paperwork and access details ready helps prevent avoidable handover delays. Depending on the move, you may be asked for some of the following.
Documents to keep ready
- Photo ID and address proof for the pickup and delivery addresses
- A room-by-room inventory with photos of valuable or fragile items
- Any society permission or lift booking confirmation at either end
- Vehicle registration, insurance and ID for car or bike transport
- The written scope and quote, kept where you can find them
Checklist for the days before
- Confirm in writing whether your move is shared or dedicated
- Book the lift and parking permission at both ends
- Name a backup receiver in Ahmedabad, and check that they can actually get the goods in
- Prepare appliances according to their manuals and arrange qualified disconnection where needed
- Pack valuables, documents and daily essentials separately and carry them yourself
- Photograph the Ahmedabad entry route and share it with the team
- On delivery, check the goods against the inventory before signing
E-way bill: household effects versus company goods
Used personal and household effects are listed among the goods exempt from e-way bill requirements. Keep an inventory and the consignment paperwork so the load can be identified. Company assets, stock and newly purchased goods need their own check: ask your accounts team and transporter to confirm the documents applicable to that consignment before loading.
Taking a Tamil Nadu vehicle to Gujarat
Keep the RC, valid insurance and the carrier’s requested identification ready for handover. If the vehicle will stay in Gujarat, check the applicable NOC, registration reassignment and road-tax steps with the RTO before the move. Transport booking and registration formalities are separate arrangements.
