Chennai to Kolkata Packers and Movers Charges
These are indicative October 2026 budget guides for planning. Your written quote after an inventory check sets the applicable price; the ranges are budgeting guides rather than a fixed tariff.
Household budget guide
| Home size | Planning range |
|---|---|
| 1 BHK | ₹16,500–₹22,500 |
| 2 BHK | ₹19,500–₹27,500 |
| 3 BHK | ₹22,500–₹32,500 |
| 4 BHK | ₹38,500–₹52,500 |
Where a home lands inside its range depends on what is actually in it. A flat with large wardrobes, a refrigerator, a washing machine and many boxes of books and kitchenware sits higher than a lightly furnished home of the same size.
What the base scope covers
The planning scope is appropriate packing for ordinary items, loading, road transport, unloading at the Kolkata address and assembly you have agreed in advance. Unloading can appear as an itemised line, but the total should count the agreed unloading work once. Any additional transfer, extra carry or unpacking must describe different work.
Mark each of these as included or extra
- Taxes and tolls
- Parking charges at either end
- Stairs and long carry where there is no working lift
- Crates for a television or glass-top furniture
- Waiting time at either address
- Technician work, such as appliance or modular furniture fitting
- Unpacking of contents
- Optional transit cover
- Storage, if any is needed
Ask for the quote in writing with each line marked, so that two quotes can be compared on the same basis.
What Changes the Price Inside the Range
On a move of this length, distance is the base. These points decide where your quote falls.
- Volume: a few large pieces keep a 2 BHK toward the lower end, while many cartons, appliances and wardrobes push it up.
- Packing depth: glass, crockery, frames and electronics need more material and handling time than bedding and clothes.
- Access at both ends: stairs, a long carry from the road to the door, no working lift and tight parking all add time and may add cost.
- Truck mode: a dedicated truck carries only your goods and costs more than space in a shared load.
- Collection date: the exact day you choose can change the price, so confirm it before you pay an advance.
- Changes after the survey: items added on loading day usually change the quote, so include every item, including balcony, loft and storeroom contents, in the inventory.
Photos or a video walk-through of each room make an inventory more reliable than a verbal description, and they give both sides a record of what was agreed.
House, Furniture, Few-Item and Office Shifting
Full house shifting
This suits a household whose whole home moves together. The scope covers packing, loading, road transport, unloading and the reassembly of beds, wardrobes and tables that you have listed. Appliances are a separate question: preparation and disconnection must follow the model’s manual or a qualified technician’s advice. Agree who prepares each appliance and whether destination installation is included or extra.
Furniture only
If you plan to buy new appliances and soft furnishings in Kolkata, a furniture-only move keeps the load smaller. List each piece with its size, whether it must be dismantled, how it will be wrapped and whether you want it reassembled on arrival. A solid wood bed and a flat-pack wardrobe are handled very differently.
A few items
Students, single professionals and families sending a bed, a cycle or some cartons ahead do not necessarily need a whole truck. There is no blanket minimum on this page, and no price is given for every possible small load. Send an item list with dimensions, the floor and lift details at both ends, and both addresses, and the quote is built from that inventory.
Shared capacity is a choice, not just a line on a list. It suits a small load when you can manage for 6–9 days after dispatch, plus the time the load waits to be consolidated before it leaves. If you need the goods by a fixed date, ask whether a dedicated truck is justified for a small load or whether another plan works better.
Small office relocation
A physical office move needs an asset list before it needs a price. Label each desk, chair, cabinet and computer with an asset tag or numbered sticker, and note which items go to which floor or room in Kolkata. Decide who disconnects and reconnects the computers, network equipment and any server; that work belongs with a qualified IT person, not the packing crew. Agree an evening or weekend loading slot to limit downtime.
| Inventory example | Planning range |
|---|---|
| 6–8 workstations with desks, chairs and computers, a few cabinets and file cartons | ₹25,000–₹40,000 |
Stock and machinery need a separate assessment; IT backup and equipment reconnection are outside the physical-moving scope and should be arranged with a qualified IT provider.
Car and Bike Transport from Chennai to Kolkata
| Vehicle | Planning range |
|---|---|
| Standard bike | ₹7,500–₹12,500 |
| Standard car | ₹10,500–₹16,500 |
| Premium bike, SUV, luxury car or closed carrier | Assessed separately |
The final figure depends on the vehicle, the exact collection date and the access at the pickup point. A carrier that cannot reach a narrow lane may need the vehicle brought to a nearby open spot, so mention this when you ask for a quote.
Before handover
- Empty the vehicle of personal items and loose accessories.
- Photograph accessible sides, existing marks and the interior where applicable, and share the condition record with the carrier.
- Note the odometer reading and hand over the keys the carrier asks for.
- Ask the carrier what fuel level it wants and which documents it needs; do not rely on a general rule, because carriers set their own requirements.
- Keep the owner's manual and service records with you unless the carrier asks for them.
Schedule the vehicle separately
A vehicle usually travels on a different carrier schedule from your household goods. Confirm its collection date and its expected arrival separately, and do not assume the car or bike reaches Kolkata with the truck carrying your furniture. Check the vehicle against the pre-handover photos when it arrives, and note any difference in writing before you sign.
Keep vehicle paperwork separate from the household cartons
Ask the selected carrier which copies of the RC, insurance, pollution certificate where applicable and identification it needs for booking. Keep the originals accessible during your own journey. Transport booking and permission to use a Tamil Nadu registered vehicle after a long-term move to West Bengal are separate matters; check the applicable NOC, registration and tax process with the relevant RTO before making arrangements.
Sending a bike by rail or with a road carrier
Compare the whole journey rather than only the freight figure. For a rail option, establish the accepting station, booking method, packing requirements, collection point and the cost of reaching both terminals. For a road carrier, establish whether collection and delivery cover your actual buildings or a transport yard. Ask for the handling and condition record in either case, then compare the total cost and collection effort.
Shared or Dedicated Truck: Days After Dispatch
| Point | Shared load | Dedicated truck |
|---|---|---|
| Planning window after dispatch | 6–9 days | 4–6 days |
| Load | Shared with other consignments | Only your goods |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Best for | Few items, flexible dates | Full homes, firmer dates |
Both windows are planning figures, not guarantees. They count from the day the truck is dispatched, not from the day you book. Packing, pickup and consolidation before dispatch are separate and come first, so add them to your calendar.
When a dedicated truck makes sense
Choose dedicated when your whole home is moving and you want fewer days between dispatch and delivery. You pay for a truck that carries only your goods and does not wait to fill up with other consignments.
When a shared load is enough
A shared load suits smaller consignments where you can manage for a week or more. Keep medicines, documents, laptops, chargers and a few days of clothes with you.
What a dedicated truck does not fix
A dedicated truck does not solve a fixed vacate day in Chennai, and it does not make a Kolkata home ready to receive goods. If your Chennai flat must be empty on a set date, agree packing and pickup around that deadline and confirm where the goods will be held before dispatch, for how long and at what cost. If the Kolkata home is not ready, a faster truck only arrives sooner at a closed door. Receiving readiness has to fit the window, which is why the festival checks below matter.
Road Distance and the NH16 Corridor
Use about 1,700 km as the planning distance. A driving check in October 2026 selected 1,684 km, with an alternative of 1,782 km, so the real figure ranges from about 1,680 to 1,780 km depending on routing, the exact pickup and delivery addresses, and any commercial vehicle restrictions along the way.
The main corridor follows NH16 up the east coast through Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. The towns below are illustrative only. The carrier chooses the approach, and there are no fixed stops.
| State | Towns on or near the corridor |
|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | Chennai |
| Andhra Pradesh | Nellore, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam |
| Odisha | Bhubaneswar, Balasore |
| West Bengal | Kharagpur, Kolkata |
Why the 31-hour figure is not a delivery time
A passenger navigation app may show about 31 hours of driving. That is a passenger-car navigation estimate, not a mover ETA: it does not include packing, loading, a goods vehicle’s operating schedule or the unloading appointment. Timing on this page is stated in days after dispatch for that reason. Ask for a named contact person and agree how updates will be shared.
Packing Materials and How the Move Runs
Read the labels before the load is closed
The visible straps and close grouping in this photo are only part of a loading plan. The labels also need to stay readable so the correct packages can be checked at unloading.
Before a Chennai to Kolkata departure, compare the finished package numbers with the inventory. If the consignment shares a vehicle, ask how your goods will be identified and whether transfers are expected. Do not treat a photograph of a packed vehicle as a complete record of the contents.
Keep the list and dispatch contact with the receiver. At delivery, count your packages and record visible exceptions before the handover is closed.
Hours of road vibration and handling make packing choice matter more on a long move. Agree the materials against your inventory.
Materials to agree
- Corrugated cartons for books, kitchenware and clothes
- Bubble wrap and foam for glass, frames, decor and electronics
- Blankets and corner guards for sofas, beds and wardrobes
- Stretch film and tape for drawers and upholstery
- Purpose-made wooden crates for a television or glass-top furniture, usually charged separately
Crate design depends on the item. A flat-panel television needs a crate built to its size, and there is no single method that suits every piece, so this page does not promise one. Dismantling of beds and wardrobes is agreed item by item, not assumed.
How the move runs
- Confirm the inventory by list, video call or a visit if offered.
- Agree what ALPM packs and what you pack yourself.
- Fix the loading slot and any building permissions in Chennai.
- Load against an item list with the condition noted, then agree the dispatch date.
- Agree how transit updates are shared and who receives the goods in Kolkata.
- Unload the outer pieces at the Kolkata address and check them against the list.
Unloading brings the outer pieces in: cartons, wrapped furniture and similar items. Unpacking the contents of those cartons, and assembly that needs a technician, are optional and agreed separately.
NH16 Weather Planning, Dry Unloading and Claim Paperwork
The Chennai–Kolkata journey passes through Andhra Pradesh and Odisha before West Bengal. Check the forecast and official warnings for the travel dates along the corridor, as well as the weather at the two homes. A clear morning in Chennai does not establish conditions for every later stage.
Keep a dry path ready at the Kolkata end
Pack clothes, books, bedding and wooden items only when dry. Agree the vehicle cover and protection for loading and unloading, then arrange a sheltered place to receive cartons. If rain makes the entrance unsafe, contact the dispatcher before changing the unloading plan. Photograph wet outer packaging and note affected package IDs on the handover record before opening them in a dry place.
Company reimbursement and office assets
Share the employer billing name, GST details where needed, claim format and the services it will reimburse before booking. Keep the estimate, payment record, invoice, consignment note and signed inventory together. For computers and office furniture, add the asset release list and the person authorised to receive it. The document requirements for personal belongings, a vehicle and commercial stock can differ; identify the load correctly when asking the transporter about paperwork.
Storage Before or After the Move
Storage is arranged only as scoped for your move, and only if you ask for it. Confirm the actual storage operator and location before booking, and treat holding as a separately assessed arrangement with its own terms.
Before you commit, get these in writing:
- The location and the name of the operator holding your goods
- How the goods are checked in, including condition notes and item identification
- Who can access the goods and when
- How long storage lasts and what it costs per period
- How the goods leave storage and what redelivery to your address costs
Chennai Pickup: Settle Access Before Loading
Delays at the Chennai end often come from access, not packing.
Society rules
Many apartment communities set loading hours, ask for gate passes and require lift protection. Tell the society office the move date and the truck size, and ask whether there is a goods lift or a service entrance.
Truck access
A long vehicle needs room to stop and turn. If your lane is narrow or parking is shared, say so when you book, so the loading plan and any extra carry charge are agreed early.
Keep these out of the load
Carry valuables, cash, original documents, medicines and laptops yourself. Gas cylinders, flammables and perishable food are usually not accepted, so confirm the exclusions list with the dispatcher.
OMR, Tambaram and western Chennai pickup planning
For an OMR pickup in Sholinganallur, Perungudi, Thoraipakkam or Siruseri, share the apartment entrance as well as the flat address. A location pin at the main road can leave the truck at a different gate from the packing team. For Velachery, Tambaram, Anna Nagar, Adyar, Guindy, Porur, Ambattur, Avadi or Poonamallee, the same enquiry should include the loading point, floors, lift dimensions and your latest handover time.
If you are joining a new job in Kolkata, plan backwards from the first day you need the home usable. Keep travel documents, work devices, medicines and a change of clothes with you. Packing day, truck dispatch and the first usable day in the new flat are separate dates.
Kolkata Receiving: Salt Lake, New Town and Central or South Kolkata
On a move of about 1,700 km, a pin code and street name are not enough. Give an address that a driver and a building guard can both find.
Salt Lake
State the sector and block, the house or flat number and a nearby landmark.
New Town
New Town is organised into Action Areas I, II and III and a central business district. Write the Action Area and the plot or tower number, not only Rajarhat, which is a wider name and can send a driver to the wrong part.
Central and south Kolkata
Send photos of your own property: the gate, the approach road, the staircase or lift and the door. Note the floor, the carrying distance from where the truck can stop, and whether the lift works. Describe your own lane as it is; do not assume it is wide or narrow.
Receiver details
Give the dispatcher the receiver's name and number, a building contact, unloading hours and lift booking rules. Report any change of receiver before the truck arrives.
Kolkata and Howrah: Match the Delivery Address to the Last Leg
A quote for Kolkata should name the actual destination. Howrah, Salt Lake, New Town and a south Kolkata address can require different final approaches even when the long-distance journey follows NH16.
| Destination | Address detail to send | Decision before dispatch |
|---|---|---|
| Howrah: Shibpur, Santragachi, Bally or Liluah | Municipality/locality, PIN, building and goods entrance | Plan for the Howrah address itself; a Kolkata city landmark across the river is not the delivery point. |
| Salt Lake and New Town | Sector/block/house for Salt Lake; Action Area, plot/project and tower for New Town | Confirm the goods gate, move-in permission and lift slot with that building. |
| Behala, Tollygunge, Jadavpur, Garia, Kasba or Ballygunge | Street and building number, floor, stair or lift measurements | Check the actual furniture route from the stopping point to the room; do not infer access from the locality name. |
| Dum Dum, Lake Town, Baguiati or Kestopur | Locality, PIN and approach photograph | Read back the full destination and receiving contact so similar landmarks do not cause a wrong approach. |
For an EM Bypass or New Town project with several towers, send the entrance used for goods and the receiving tower together. If the first vehicle cannot reach the approved unloading point, settle any smaller-vehicle transfer, handling and cost before dispatch rather than assuming it is part of every delivery.
Moving to Kolkata Around Durga Puja: Three Checks Before Dispatch
Around Durga Puja, confirm three things before the truck leaves Chennai: the road approach, the building's goods entry and lift window, and a receiver who is available. Any one of them can hold up delivery.
The road and the building are separate questions. A truck that reaches the area may still wait if the building's goods entry is shut, and a building that is ready may be hard to reach on the day. Checking early is cheaper than paying for a truck to wait.
| Check | What to confirm | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Road approach | The current advisory from the official authority responsible for your actual delivery area, delivery date and vehicle category | Date checked and who confirmed |
| Building goods entry and lift | Whether the entry and lift are open on the delivery date, and for how long | Agreed slot and contact name |
| Receiver | That the named receiver can be present and accept goods against the item list | Name, number and latest reconfirmation |
Salt Lake and New Town may not fall under the same office, so do not assume one authority covers both. Ask which office covers your exact address. Check the advisory that applies to your delivery date and allocated goods vehicle; a previous year’s restriction hours may not apply. Do not send a truck on the assumption that a normal-day route will work.
If the slot is not available
A second receiver helps only when the building's goods entry is open. If the entry is closed, a backup person at the door cannot fix that. In that case, choose another agreed delivery slot, or an assessed holding with a redelivery cost approved in writing. Do not assume an off-street waiting place or free holding will be available.
| Situation | What helps | What does not |
|---|---|---|
| Entry open, main receiver unavailable | A named backup receiver accepts goods against the list | Waiting for the main receiver without a plan |
| Goods entry closed on the delivery day | Another agreed slot, or an assessed holding with written redelivery approval | Adding a second receiver, or assuming free holding |
| Road approach uncertain, building ready | Rechecking the advisory for the area, date and vehicle, then agreeing an approach with the dispatcher | Relying on the usual route |
| Both road and building uncertain | Rescheduling dispatch before the truck leaves Chennai | Dispatching and hoping it clears |
Dispatch-to-Delivery readiness record
Fill in this record with the dispatcher before the truck leaves, and update it as dates firm up.
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| Packing day | Date and time slot in Chennai |
| Expected dispatch | Date the truck leaves Chennai |
| Expected delivery window | Planning window in days after dispatch, not a guarantee |
| Building appointment | Goods entry and lift slot, plus the contact who gave it |
| Backup slot | A second delivery day or time agreed in advance |
| Receiver and backup | Names and numbers of both people |
| Latest reconfirmation | Date and time of the last check of the approach and the building |
| Extra charges | Basis for waiting or holding charges and who approves them in writing |
A hypothetical illustration, not an actual trip or customer: a receiver books the goods lift for a morning slot and confirms the approach with the building contact, but the entry is closed on the day. With the record filled in, the dispatcher and receiver already know the backup slot and who may approve a holding, so they can choose an agreed option and record any extra cost before proceeding.
Why Ask ALPM and How to Compare Chennai to Kolkata Movers
Agarwal Logistics Packers and Movers (ALPM) is an independent company with a Chennai branch at Senneerkuppam, which is the address to send your inventory. For this route it works from a photo or video inventory with access notes, agrees an update contact with you, and records the count of outer pieces at handover so the same count can be checked on arrival.
Compare on the same inventory
Quotes can differ by thousands of rupees for reasons unrelated to quality. Give every company the same inventory and compare these points.
- Identity: the trade name, GST details and the address on the quote.
- Scope: what packing is done and by whom, and what is extra.
- Mode: shared or dedicated, and the planning window in days after dispatch.
- Payment: the advance, the balance and when each is due.
- Changes: the cancellation terms and what happens if the date moves.
- Updates: who you contact and how often you will hear from them.
Transit cover
If cover is offered, ask who the provider is, what the policy and its exclusions say, whether there is a deductible, how the goods are valued and what the report and claim procedure is. Cover works alongside the carrier's liability, not in place of it, and no compensation is guaranteed. Keep the item list, photos and handover count as your records.
