What the household figures cover
For a household move, the guide counts packing, loading, road transport, unloading and agreed assembly once, together. It should not be added to again for the same work. A vehicle is a different job, so its base scope is stated in writing on its own line.

A light, well-packed load with easy access tends to sit toward the lower end. Heavy furniture, dismantling, high floors and a difficult final approach push it upward.
Route, Distance and Delivery Days
The road distance
Plan on about 1,850 km between Chennai and Varanasi (Banaras, Kashi). The exact figure shifts with your pickup address, your drop address and the corridor the allocated operator chooses.
A central approach, not a fixed road
A typical illustration is a central-India approach through Hyderabad, Nagpur and Jabalpur, then an Uttar Pradesh connector into Varanasi. It is only an illustration. The operator allocated to your goods selects the real corridor, so no waypoint, toll order, bridge order or current road closure is promised here. Car driving hours should not be used as a truck estimate, because a loaded goods vehicle follows its own pace and stops.

The vehicle owner or carrier sets the actual date window, so ask for the dispatch date and an expected delivery window in writing.
Plan Your Varanasi Receiving Date Before Leaving Chennai
A joining date, a family visit and the day your home can receive furniture may be different. Agree who has the keys and can stay for the unloading window, especially if you reach Banaras before the household truck.
- Rain at pickup or delivery: check local forecasts and warnings near the dates. Keep furniture dry before wrapping and arrange sheltered staging where possible. If waterlogging affects the approach, discuss a workable slot with the coordinator.
- Winter visibility: ask the operator about conditions nearer dispatch and keep the receiver informed if the arrival estimate changes. Do not turn a passenger-map drive time into a promised goods delivery.
- A ghat-side address during a festival or event: check current local traffic advice and the actual building access for your unloading date. A festival name does not establish a universal truck ban, public entry hour or fixed surcharge.
- Essential belongings: carry medicines, original papers, devices, chargers, basic clothes and a first-night kit with you while the goods follow their own window.
For shared transport, ask about consolidation before departure as well as the 6–9 day after-dispatch guide. If you can offer alternative dates, compare the available arrangements; a weekday is not automatically cheaper or faster.
From the main truck to your Varanasi door: who receives which goods?
Varanasi’s old-city alleys and riverfront steps can make the final approach different from the highway journey. If your home needs a carry or a local transfer, record who holds your goods between the lawful truck stop and the actual door.
Three legs, one agreed plan
Plan the final approach as a dated delivery plan tied to the same approved quote and inventory. It has three legs.
- Leg A is the lawful stopping point of the main truck. This is the goods stop, and it is kept separate from any ghat, temple or hotel used only to describe the neighbourhood.
- Leg B is the accepted way of carrying or transferring the goods, with the complete path from the main truck to the entrance.
- Leg C is the full house, lane and door with its PIN, the actual goods entrance and the person who will receive the goods.
Record the truck stopping point and goods entrance separately when they are at different places, and an orientation landmark is not an address. Give the approximate carry distance, the number of steps, the bends, any landings and the door clearances. Add the length, width and height of the largest packed furniture and its approximate weight, whether dismantling is allowed by the design, and what the crew has assessed. Nobody can promise that a piece fits on the strength of one width measurement.
Whether a local operator or location is permitted and available, the crew needed, and the cost of unloading, reloading and carrying all depend on the actual place. That local leg is costed once, and the scope is agreed before Chennai loading and dispatch. A date and time window is confirmed before the vehicle departs and reconfirmed as it nears its ETA. Confirm the actual local and property permissions for the allocated vehicle and date.
The record that keeps custody clear
Give every item or carton a move ID, for example H01 for a bed, F01 for a wardrobe and C01 for the first carton. Keep the same IDs on the quote version, the date and the contact for whoever is handling the goods at each stage. At the main truck stop, record the count of IDs and the visible condition of the goods those IDs mark. Do the same at the start and end of the local leg, then match the door receipt against the same IDs and the same condition notes.
If something is incomplete or missing, record it as an exception for that leg. Do not mark the job fully complete at the roadside while contracted work at the door is still outstanding. The outer packing and the count do not prove what is inside, so unpack fragile boxes soon and report any problem promptly. Keep the contact and access details with the move’s accepted inventory so the coordinator, handlers and receiver use the same version.
A hypothetical example: 12 cartons and a wardrobe
In this hypothetical move, cartons C01–C12 and wardrobe F01 form the accepted consignment. At the main truck stop, all 12 cartons and F01 are recorded. The local leg then delivers 11 cartons and F01 to your door, while carton C12 is still at the transfer point.
The roadside count alone does not close the job, and it does not prove a loss either. Identify who currently holds C12, where it is, its visible condition, the time it is assigned to the next leg and an authorised contact. Record the door receipt as received 11 cartons and F01, with C12 outstanding and any condition exceptions noted. Update the receipt when C12 is actually received.
If the receiver cannot stay ready, agree a backup. Name an authorised person with keys and confirm building permission, any lift booking, the crew and space to receive the goods. Alternatively, agree a new written time slot or an assessed holding arrangement with the actual operator, location, availability, custody, duration, rate, exit and redelivery. Waiting or holding should be quoted, not assumed to cost nothing. You should not be asked to sign away the right to report a problem.
Large pieces: decide before loading
If packed wardrobe F01 may not clear a turn in the stairs, treat it as pending before loading. The crew can assess the actual path, and a qualified person can dismantle it only if the design allows. Approve the revised packed size, handling and refitting costs before loading; if no feasible plan is accepted, leave the item out or defer it under a separate written arrangement. It should not be forced round a turn or lifted on a rope. A local vehicle does not fix a stair turn, so the decision belongs before loading, not at the door.
House Shifting: Inventory, Furniture and Appliances
Build the inventory first
The goods you own tell the real story better than the room count. A 2 BHK with light furniture can price close to a 1 BHK, while one with large wardrobes, a big fridge and a washing machine can reach the top of its band. Before enquiring, prepare a list that covers the following.
- Each large piece of furniture, noting which ones come apart
- Every appliance, including the fridge, washing machine, TV and microwave
- Glass, mirrors, framed pictures and kitchenware
- Floor level, lift availability and where a truck can stand in Chennai
- What you know about the Varanasi floor, lane width and steps
Furniture and fragile goods
Furniture is dismantled only where the design allows. Fittings are labelled and bagged, and reassembly is agreed in advance. Books go into small cartons so that no box becomes too heavy. Crockery needs dividers, and glass and television screens need rigid, cushioned packing. Crates are used only where they have been assessed as needed.
If you pack some boxes yourself, ask what acceptance terms apply to them. Outer packing can be counted, but it cannot show what is inside.
Fridge, washing machine and AC
For a fridge, follow the maker's manual on defrosting and drying. For a washing machine, fit transit bolts or restraints if that model needs them. There is no universal rule about the day before the move or when to restart, so use the manual. Removing and refitting an AC is work for a qualified AC or electrical technician, and it is quoted separately.
Lorry hire, packed capacity and family pieces
A truck-hire price may cover transport without the packing and in-home work. Compare it with a household package after adding loading, unloading, assembly and any agreed local delivery leg. Capacity follows packed volume, weight and the largest pieces rather than a fixed truck size for each BHK.
Flag old wooden furniture, pooja-room pieces and anything unusually heavy or delicate before packing is priced. An inverter or battery also needs its type, model and carrier acceptance checked; follow the maker's or a qualified technician's preparation instructions rather than treating every battery as an ordinary household carton.
Few Items and Office Shifting
Few items
A small consignment suits a part load on a shared vehicle. Send the number of pieces, their packed size, the weight and volume, and ask how the minimum charge is applied. Pieces that need dismantling or have glass faces should be listed separately, so the space and care they need are clear.
Office moves
An office is priced from the actual list of assets, not a fixed rate. Give each asset an ID before release and confirm who receives each one at the other end. Arrange and price data backup, disconnection, reconnection and testing with your own qualified IT provider. Plan the unloading order so that workstations can be set up in a sensible sequence. Allow a separate setup window after the physical move; machinery needs its own acceptance assessment.
Student belongings and a furnished room
If you are joining BHU or another institution, confirm where you will live before sending furniture. Ask the owner or accommodation office what is supplied and what you may bring. The room or rented-home address, permitted receiving time and named receiver belong in the booking; the college gate or joining-office address may be only a landmark. Quote the bike separately from cartons and confirm its carrier window.

Base scope and extras
The vehicle price depends on the actual model and on the carrier, including open or enclosed transport and the actual collection and delivery points. It is kept separate from your household price. Ask for the base scope in writing, covering wrapping, collection, delivery, loading and unloading, with GST shown separately and the other work and any cover marked included, extra or not applicable.
If you already have your own vehicle and only need help with loading, ask for that as a separate quote, with each side's responsibilities written down.
Preparing the vehicle
- Take dated photos of every side before loading, and note the odometer reading.
- Hand over keys and any accessories that stay with the vehicle, and take loose valuables out.
- Keep copies of the papers needed for the move.
- Follow the maker's and the carrier's instructions on fuel and battery, since there is no universal low-fuel rule.
- At delivery, compare the vehicle with your photos before the crew leaves.
Agree the actual carrier’s collection and delivery window separately from the household truck. At arrival, check the odometer, keys and accessories as well as the vehicle’s condition, and record any difference promptly.
Vehicle paperwork and a longer stay in Uttar Pradesh
Prepare the RC, insurance and applicable PUC details requested by the carrier, owner authorisation where needed, and the condition record. Keep originals with you and supply the booking copies requested. If the vehicle will stay in Uttar Pradesh longer term, check the registration and tax requirements for your own vehicle with the relevant transport authority. Transport booking and completing that process are separate matters.
Packing Materials and the Moving Process
Materials
Over about 1,850 km goods rub, shift and take vibration, so each category needs its own protection. Strong corrugated cartons and sheets suit books and kitchen items. Bubble wrap protects glass, screens and frames. Foam or cloth guards polished edges. Stretch wrap holds doors and drawers closed, and crates are for items that have been assessed as needing them.
Seven steps from enquiry to handover
- Make the enquiry with a photo or video walkthrough of the home.
- Share an inventory and review access at both ends.
- Receive an itemised estimate with its scope written out.
- Approve the estimate and the booking terms.
- Pack and load against the inventory, with fragile boxes marked.
- Dispatch, with the updates agreed beforehand.
- Unload, complete agreed assembly and hand over.
At handover, check the IDs against the list and look at the corresponding goods for visible condition. Intact outer packing and a correct count do not prove the contents. Record any exception promptly and unpack fragile boxes soon.
Chennai Pickup and Varanasi Drop
Chennai pickup
ALPM has a Chennai branch at Senneerkuppam. Before loading day, check your building's move-out slot, lift timing and gate hours, and where a truck may lawfully stand. If the street is too narrow, ask whether a smaller vehicle shuttles goods to the main truck and whether that is charged.
Varanasi drop
A Varanasi drop is quoted by address. In areas such as Lanka, Sigra, Mahmoorganj and Cantonment, the exact street and building decide the plan, and not every one of them has narrow lanes. A drop at Ramnagar, on the opposite side of the river or in an outlying area needs the exact address and a separate assessment. It does not automatically carry a standard city price.
Include the Chennai pickup neighbourhood
Send the building location whether it is Porur, Valasaravakkam, Poonamallee, Avadi, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Perambur, T Nagar, Guindy, Velachery or Tambaram. For OMR around Perungudi, Thoraipakkam or Sholinganallur, add the tower and goods entrance as well as the locality. The city approach and loading time depend on the actual building.
Ask your association about its move-out slot and lift booking before settling the packing date. Show the route from the flat to the stopping point, particularly if there are stairs or a long carry. A main-road landmark cannot establish whether the largest packed piece will fit.
More Banaras neighbourhoods and the last lane
Enquiries may name Godowlia, Assi, Bhelupur, Chowk, Bengali Tola, Durgakund, Shivpur, Sarnath, Pandeypur, Lahartara or Manduadih. Give the lane, door number, PIN and goods entrance. Check that property's actual approach rather than assuming every old-city address needs the same vehicle or that every colony has easy truck access. Use the final-lane plan above where the truck stop and home entrance are different places.
Other towns need their own destination estimate
If you mean Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar (Mughalsarai), Chandauli, Mirzapur, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Bhadohi or Azamgarh, state the actual town and address when enquiring. Availability, road distance, local handling and price need checking for that destination. A Varanasi city quote does not automatically include another district or an additional drop.
Holding, Storage and a Backup Receiver
Storage is used only if it is needed and feasible. Confirm the actual operator, the location, its availability, who holds custody, the visible condition of the goods against their IDs, access, the duration, the rate, the exit and the redelivery. Confirm the actual storage conditions and full charges before approving it.
A transfer is used only when it is needed, lawful and feasible. It depends on the permitted operator and location, the available crew, and the unloading, reloading and carrying of the local leg. That cost is counted once, and the record should note the IDs and the visible condition of the goods, not only the IDs.
A backup receiver is arranged only if the gate, lift, crew and room are ready. If they are not, agree a new written slot or an assessed holding arrangement.

Before You Book: Payments, Changes and Optional Cover
Ask for the advance amount, any staged payments, and the cancellation and rescheduling terms in writing before you book. Check what happens if the Varanasi address is not ready on arrival.
Optional transit cover is separate from the carrier's liability. Ask about the actual insurer's policy, how the declared value is set, the exclusions, the deductible and how a claim is reported. Confirm the actual premium and terms rather than assuming a fixed percentage or full payout. Check whether cover is included in the quote.
In the days before the move, prepare a signed inventory copy, take photos of high-value items, confirm move-out and move-in permissions with both buildings, and carry jewellery, cash, laptops and original documents yourself. Empty and prepare appliances according to their own manuals.
