By road, Delhi to Chennai works out to about 2,200 km. Most of the journey runs south on NH44 through Agra, Gwalior, Jhansi and Nagpur towards Telangana. For the last part into Chennai, trucks usually come down through Andhra Pradesh, either along the east coast side via Vijayawada and Nellore, or via the Kurnool–Tirupati side. Which one is used depends on the vehicle, the load and road conditions at the time.

How long does Delhi to Chennai shifting take?

When a mover says "6 days", always ask: 6 days from when? Packing day, pickup day and dispatch day are not the same thing. Our planning windows are below.

Things that can stretch the window

• A big house that needs two packing days.
• Heavy rain or waterlogging in Chennai, mostly between October and December.

Part load or a dedicated truck from Delhi to Chennai

A part load, or shared shifting, means your goods share truck space with other customers' consignments going south. A dedicated vehicle carries only your goods. On a route this long, the choice makes a real difference to both cost and handling.

Shifting between October and January: pollution rules

Vehicle eligibility and entry can change under CAQM directions and the GRAP stage in force. These rules have been revised, so do not rely on an old list of exempt fuels or vehicle classes when booking a future move.

A Chennai delivery address the crew can actually reach

Chennai addresses work a little differently from Delhi ones. Instead of sector, block and pocket, you will usually see a door number, a street name, a nagar or colony, the area and a PIN code. Many people also go by landmarks, like a temple, a bus stop or a well-known bakery. Landmarks help, but on their own they are not enough for a loaded truck.

Send us this before the truck leaves Delhi

• Door or flat number, block, floor and apartment or community name.
• Street name, and the cross street or main road it comes off.
• Nagar or colony, area and PIN code.
• A location pin dropped at the gate the truck will use, not at the main road.
• Two receiver names and phone numbers, at least one of whom can speak with the crew on delivery day.

Different parts of Chennai, different challenges

The newer gated communities along OMR, ECR and GST Road towards Sholinganallur, Siruseri, Kelambakkam and Guduvanchery usually have proper roads but strict security, fixed unloading hours and lift booking rules. Older areas like Mylapore, T. Nagar, Triplicane or parts of Purasawalkam have narrow streets where a big truck may not get in at all, and goods may need to come the last stretch in a smaller vehicle. Areas like Velachery, Pallikaranai and parts of Tambaram can get waterlogged in heavy rain, so delivery there sometimes waits for the water to clear.

Heavy vehicles also face timing restrictions on some Chennai roads during busy hours, and police diversions do come up for events. These change from road to road, so we plan the arrival time around your specific address, not a single city rule.

Booking the delivery day

1. Confirm when you will get the keys and that the flat is empty and clean.
2. Ask the association or facility office if unloading needs a booked slot or a form.
3. Book the lift and check that your fridge and sofa actually fit inside it once packed.
4. Keep your receiver at the gate when the crew calls before arrival.
5. Check items against the list, and write any damage on the delivery note before you sign.

Packing for a Chennai monsoon delivery

Chennai gets most of its yearly rain between October and December, during the northeast monsoon. The air stays humid for much of the year too. Goods coming from dry winter Delhi straight into this weather need a little extra thought.

• Ask for waterproof outer wrapping on mattresses, sofas, wooden furniture and carton stacks if you are moving in these months.
• Choose suitable moisture protection for each material and pack only dry items. Follow packaging and maker guidance rather than placing loose desiccants in every carton.
• Do not seal damp clothes or freshly washed curtains in cartons. They will smell by the time they reach.
• If it is raining hard on delivery day, it is better to wait an hour than to carry a sofa through a downpour. Agree a covered spot near the gate in advance if your building has one.
• After unpacking, open the cartons of books and wooden items first and let them breathe.

No wrap makes goods fully weatherproof, so the real protection is good packing, sensible timing and a quick check on arrival.

Household and Selected-Item Moving Services to Chennai

Packing for a 2,200 km road journey

On a long route, goods are on the road for several days over all kinds of surfaces. The aim is simple: nothing should move inside the box, and nothing should move inside the truck.

Kitchen, glass and decor

Plates go in standing, not flat, with cushioning between each one. Glasses are wrapped one by one. Heavy things like pressure cookers and steel utensils go in small boxes, so a single carton is not too heavy to lift safely. Pooja items and idols are wrapped separately and marked, so they are easy to find first at the new house.

Appliances

• Fridge: defrost and wipe it dry a day before. Follow the maker's advice on how long to wait before switching it on after delivery.
• Washing machine: fit the correct transport locks if your maker requires them, and remove them before use. If parts are missing, ask a qualified technician for the right ones.
• TV: use the original box if you still have it. Otherwise use suitable screen and corner support and follow the maker’s transport orientation.

Furniture

Beds, wardrobes and dining tables are dismantled where their design allows. Screws and fittings go into a labelled bag taped to the outer wrap of that piece, never onto a polished surface. Glass tops and mirrors are packed according to their size and frame.

Keep these with you, not in the truck

• Cash, jewellery, property papers, certificates and anything you cannot replace.
• Medicines, chargers, a week's clothes and some basic kitchen things.
• Laptops and work devices, especially if you are joining a new office in Chennai.

Gas cylinders, kerosene, paint, perishables and anything flammable cannot go in household cartons. Tell us early about anything unusual so we can confirm whether it can travel.

Check the base as well as the tall sides

Cardboard panels cover the tall item in this photo, with wrapping holding the protection around it. Before dispatch, ask the team to check the bottom edges too. A well-covered front does not show whether the base is supported or whether loose internal parts have been prepared for travel.

For a Delhi to Chennai move, identify the actual item during the survey and agree its preparation before packing day. If it is an appliance, follow its maker's transport and restart instructions. At the receiving address, keep enough room to remove the covering and check the item without blocking the entrance or rushing the handover.

Car and bike transport from Delhi to Chennai

Before you hand over the vehicle

• Empty the car of personal things. Household goods should not be packed inside the car.

• For bikes, remove loose accessories like top boxes and phone mounts, and note what you are handing over.
• For electric vehicles, tell us the model early and follow the maker's guidance on charge level.

If your car or bike will stay in Tamil Nadu for a long time, check the rules for re-registration and road tax with the RTO or a qualified agent. Vehicles on a BH series number follow different rules. These questions depend on your vehicle, so please confirm them officially rather than going by any moving website.

Office shifting from Delhi to Chennai
